OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTINGS

OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTINGS

Landscapes, abstraction, surrealism
I always loved to paint and make drawings. I started with pencils, acrylic paint, charcoal and progressed to oil paint. Every medium faces other challenges and provides different advantages. At the special art class at school I learned to be creative. At university I learned technical drawing skills and depicting reality in proper proportions. As an autodidactic I experimented with different situations to create the impressions in the atmosphere that I want. For example: tranquility at sea, dark and mystical in an abstract winter garden, warm and lifely in Friesland.

My creativity was originally mainly inspired by Van Gogh and Dali. My style and fantasy naturally show resemblances to these artists. I was also very impressed by Rothko. I mistook his paintings to be nothing more than plain colour rectangles until I saw a good exhibition that explained how Rothko tried to make an abstraction of the soul. In that perspective the colour spaces become a window of the soul that almost swallow the viewer whole. After this revelation I too left the premises dizzy. The abstraction of dancing figures is inspired on this exhibition. After looking at the painting for a while the figures start to move. I am also fond of Sluiters and how he showed an opposite development to Mondriaan in terms of abstract to realism. They show similarities at first but show divergent developments. Then there is Monet, Matisse and of course pointillism.

The heath in autumn painting has a peculiar light fall on two accounts. In summer the light is full and bright as the heath in full bloom painting shows, in autumn light changes to be more gloomy and the shadows become longer. Additionally, when lower sunlight falls over the painting it seems to light up.

The paintings here are a mere selection, see overview in gallery. The art is to express the tension of emotions, or the proper atmosphere of a landscape. I am still developing my style depending on the assignment or the challenge I pose myself. When painting I prefer to mix all my colours personally from the primary colours. Creating atmosphere is the interference of a blend of colours and the depiction of an intuition.
